CleanTech Systems

In 1971 at the age of fourteen, Bill Crawford worked evening part time for Payne’s Floor Waxing in Middletown, NJ working on commercial janitorial & floor maintenance contracts. In 1978 after his enlistment in the Army, Bill established Crawford Floor Waxing with a van and one used floor machine to supplement his GI Bill income while attending Seton Hall College. Bill knew the quality of service his competition was offering and was determined to provide superior quality work with realistic pricing.


By 1980 Crawford Floor Waxing had established commercial janitorial, floor maintenance and carpet cleaning contracts with an annual revenue of approximately $250,000. One of the contracts, Atlantic Highlands Municipality, asked Bill to re-write the job specifications for the contract to bring them up to the level of service Crawford Floor Waxing was providing. In 1984 Crawford Floor Waxing Incorporated became WJ Crawford Inc., trading as CleanTech Systems. Operating with multiple work vehicles and twenty-five employees, CleanTech Systems was now offering janitorial contracting, floor maintenance, window cleaning, carpet & upholstery cleaning, water & sewer damage restoration, and mold remediation services.


To ensure CleanTech Systems would remain a superior provider of commercial cleaning, Bill became a member of the Association of Carpet Cleaning Technicians and the Institute of Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Technicians. He obtained certifications for carpet and upholstery cleaning, rug dyeing, water damage restoration, mold remediation, and a certification to represent Dupont for Stain Master Carpet warranty work.
